Richard Pope Ellenberger Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

RICHMOND, Ind. – Richard Pope Ellenberger, age 82, of Richmond, Indiana, entered into the fullness of eternal life in the early hours of May 1, 2017. He was born on May 16, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Eugene Phillip and Ella Noble Pope Ellenberger, the older of two sons, and lived his early years in Lakewood, Ohio. Richard moved to Hubbard Woods, Illinois, in 1942 and to Highland Park, Illinois, in 1945. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1952 and studied at the University of Illinois from 1952 to 1954. Richard served in the United States Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1955. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958 from Hanover College, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Richard attended Earlham School of Religion in the early 1990s and, though short of a thesis, completed the studies for a Master of Arts in religion. He was employed in banking, publication, education, senior care, and general employment. Richard was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He engaged in ministry with those on the margins of society – visiting and corresponding with inmates, advocating for LGBT concerns, and participating in the ministry of Renaissance House in Richmond. Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, Frederick and Karol Ellenberger of Rockford, Illinois, and many nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 800 North A Street, Richmond with Deacon Barry Cramer officiating. Burial will be in Rochester Station Cemetery, an ancestral burial site from the 1840s in Lorain County, Ohio.
