Lawrence M. Smith age 66, of Williamsburg, died Friday, March 13, 2009 at Reid Hospital.
He was born May 2, 1942, in Richmond, to Dr. William E. and Edith Milbourn Smith and had been a resident of this area most of his life. He had managed the family farm many years and was the Blacksmith at the Wayne County Museum for over forty years. He was the blacksmith that worked on the Whitewater Valley Railroad and many other operating Railroad Museums.
Larry attended William Penn College and graduated from Purdue University. He was a member and Past Master of Richmond Masonic Lodge #196 and Webb Masonic Lodge #24. He was a member of Maple Syrup Producers Association, Indiana Blacksmithing Association, and The Eastern Indiana Gem and Geological Society. Larry was an enthusiast for antique cars and engines, an activist in Forestry and conservation, and a pilot of small airplanes.
Survivors include his brother, Richard Smith of Richmond and one brother-in-law, George Blakey of Richmond.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William and Edith Smith and one sister, Dr. Carolyn Blakey.
A memorial service for Lawrence M. Smith will be 2:00 pm Sunday, April 19, 2009, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond, Indiana 47374.
