Obituary:
RICHMOND, Ind. – Ruth E. Burkett, age 89, of Richmond, died Friday, February 8, 2013, in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was born July 17, 1923, in Clark, South Dakota, to Glenn and Anna Donahue. Ruth earned a music degree from Chicago Musical College in 1946. She taught band in Spiceland, Indiana, and Campbellstown, Ohio, between 1947 and 1952, and was a private piano teacher for 60 years from 1953 to 2013 in Richmond. Ruth was active in Richmond Piano Guild, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, and was a former member of West Richmond Friends Meeting and First Friends Meeting. She was a great supporter of Richmond High School musicians and music programs. Many of her former students are now professional musicians and teachers in the area and around the country. She taught more than a thousand local piano students over her 60 year teaching career. Survivors include her sons, Steve Burkett (Judy Woten) of Lynchburg, Virginia, and David (Susan) Burkett of Medford, New Jersey; grandsons, Daniel, Jonathan, and Kevin Burkett of Medford, New Jersey; sister, Kathleen Shade of Kearney, Nebraska; and brother, Robert Donahue of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Burkett who died in 1963; parents; and sisters, Nadine Lantz and Dorothy Dillingham. Memorial visitation for Ruth E. Burkett will be from 12 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond, with a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 23, 2013, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Earlham Cemetery. Former students and families are welcome to come celebrate the legacy of Ruth’s life and join the musicians that she taught with respect, care, and love.
