Margaret Ann Franzen

RICHMOND, Ind. – Margaret Ann Franzen, age 84, of Richmond, died Friday, December 21, 2012, after a short stay for rehabilitation at Golden Living Center/Golden Rule. She was born September 9, 1928, in Anderson, Indiana, to Omar and Mildred Cox Gustin. After graduating from Anderson High School, Anderson, Indiana, she attended Ball State University. Margaret married Carl Heydon Franzen in 1948 and raised their four children in Indianapolis. After his retirement, Margaret and Carl moved to Brown County, Indiana, where they lived for 20 years. She moved to Richmond in 2005. Margaret was an active member of the Indianapolis Hiking Club and St. David’s Episcopal Church in Nashville, Indiana. She was a volunteer at the T.C. Steele Historic Site. Margaret enjoyed gardening and hiking including many trips to the West with Heydon. She especially loved to talk about their hike to the summit of Wheeler Peak, New Mexico. Survivors include her daughters, Ann (Bill Roha) Franzen-Roha of Richmond and Susan (Donald) Osborne of Cumming, Georgia; five grandchildren, Donell Christine (Konrad) Ziegler of Canton, Georgia, Christopher Carl (Jana) Osborne of Gainesville, Georgia, Leah Marie Franzen of Indiana, Stefan Karl Roha of Washington, D.C., and Carl Heydon Franzen III of Indiana; great-grandchildren, Max and Susannah Ziegler; three sisters, Eleanor Hickman of Pendleton, Indiana, Mary Jane (Jim) Buxton of Fairview Glade, Tennessee, and Kathryn (Charlie) Bentley of The Villages, Florida; a brother-in-law, Richard (Edith) Franzen of Ewen, Michigan; a daughter-in-law, Susan Kay Franzen of Burkesville, Kentucky; nieces; nephews; cousins; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Heydon Franzen; infant brother, Morris Gustin; parents; sons, Carl Heydon Franzen II and Joel Gustin Franzen. A Celebration of Life is planned in Brown County, Indiana early in April 2013. Arrangements are being handled by Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond.
